June 8, 1922 - July 2, 2010

James W. "Bill" Carr, 88, of New Carlisle, IN, died at 11 p.m. Friday, July 2, 2010, at his home following a long period of declining strength and health. For the last 20 years, he fought courageously against cancer and heart-related illnesses. While we will always love and miss our Husband, Dad and Papa, the family rejoices in the knowledge that he is forever at home with our Lord and Savior.

He was born June 8, 1922, to Webster R. and Inez (Wykoff) Carr and had been a lifelong resident of New Carlisle.

After graduating New Carlisle High School in 1940, he joined the Army and served in the South Pacific during World War II. Bill retired from Lenick's in 1984 after working there 20 years. He was a long-term member of New Carlisle Wesleyan Church. He loved basketball. He was an avid gardener and could be found there most days spring, summer and fall.

On Valentine's Day 1948, in New Carlisle, he married Leah M. White. His wife of 62 years survives.

Also surviving are eight children, James A. (Debra) Carr of LaGrange, IN, David (Karen) Carr of Ontario, WI, Dale (Nancy) Carr of New Carlisle, Stephen (Ina) Carr of Galien, MI, Cheryl (Bill) Hagerman of Ontario, WI, Susan (Scott) Dobbs of Ontario, WI, Joseph Carr of Harbert, MI, and Kenneth (Tammie) Carr of New Carlisle; 23 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and sister, Annaveve Amen, and two aunts, Ruth Robinson and Mary Clendenen, all of New Carlisle.

He was preceded in death by his parents; beloved daughter Claudia Carr; brother Joseph Carr; and sister Virginia von Arx.

Friends will be received at New Carlisle Wesleyan Church on Monday, July 5, from 4 to 8 p.m. EST and on Tuesday, July 6, from 10 to 11 a.m. EST. Services will be held at the church on Tuesday at 11 a.m. EST. Interment will follow in New Carlisle Cemetery with full military honors. Cutler Funeral Home, LaPorte, is handling arrangements.

Contributions may be made to New Carlisle Wesleyan Church, 32645 Early Rd., New Carlisle, IN 46552; or Harbor Light Hospice, 4330 Miami St., South Bend, IN 46614.
