|Death: ||Oct. 16, 1913|
John Winston Baker was born to the marriage of James H. and Frances Hancock Baker. In 1831 the James H. Baker family moved to the Texas territory, then owned by Mexico. After living in the Caldwell County area, the family settled on a farm on Onion Creek in Travis County, Texas. This was after the Republic of Texas defeated Santa Anna's Mexican army at the Battle of San Jacinto. John's father, James H. Baker was a member of the Republic of Texas army that helped free Texas from Mexico.
After the death of his father, James H. Baker, John and two of his brothers moved a large herd of cattle to San Saba County, Texas and claimed a large tract of land that had been awarded to their father for his service in the Army of the Republic of Texas. John sold his part to his brothers and bought land known as Baker Springs, located east of San Saba, Texas.
John not only farmed and ranched his land, but was also active in mercantile and other activities in the San Saba community. In 1860 he enlisted, as a Texas Ranger,in the Captain J.J. Cureton, Texas Ranger unit that served to protect the frontier area against Indian raids and outlaw activities. Beginning in 1877 he also served as San Saba postmaster until 1883.
John married Elizabeth Wood, daughter of another Texas patriot, James T. Wood. They raised several sons and daughters in San Saba County. The daughters were Ada, May,Ocie, Mattie, Lula and Bessie. Their sons were Winston, Eddie, Leone, Harry and Emmett.
John and his wife, seeking advantages for the family, decided to sell out their holdings and move to the Seattle, Washington area, making the move in the late 1880's. There they spent the rest of their lives. Elizabeth died in 1903 and John died in 1913. Both are buried in the Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Seattle, Washington.
