William Henry Garrett Found Dead in Nine Feet of Water - Efforts to Revive Lad Fruitless

William Henry Garrett, 13, son of Mr. and Mrs. Riley A. Garrett was found dead in about nine feet of water at the City Swimming Pool about 6:30 o'clock Friday night.

Justice of the Peace C.W. Duke rendered a decision that death was due to accidental drowning. Artificial respiration efforts by a doctor, nurses, lifeguards and mechanical devices were unavailing. After working with the lad for a considerable time, they took him to Municipal Hospital and continued to work with him, but their efforts were fruitless there also.

Judge Duke said that his information was that the boy's body was found either by swimmers or lifeguard Billy Springfield and that the latter brought the body out of the pool. Judge Duke said he was informed about 20 swimmers were at the pool at the time.

"There were no bruises found on head or body so the verdict of accidental death by drowning was rendered," said Judge Duke.

Mrs. C.L. Freeland, who has the pool under lease, said that William Henry's sisters told her that he could not swim and that they had seen him on the bank very shortly before his body was found. Mrs. Freeland was deeply distressed over the accident.

William Henry was born in Ennis March 17, 1935. He was a student in David Crockett School and would have been in the seventh grade next term.

Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Riley A. Garrett; two brothers, Floyd A. Garrett of Camp Hood and Riley Garrett Jr. of Ennis; five sisters, Mrs. Marvin Walker, and Misses Helen, Fay, Betty Marie, Vada Louise and Ida Jean Garrett, all of Ennis, and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Doc Richardson, Ennis.

Funeral services, with arrangements by J.E. Keever, will be held at 2 P.M. Sunday in Keever Chapel, with Rev. Robert C. Fling, paster of the Tabernacle Baptist Church, conducting. Interment will be made in Myrtle Cemetery.
