Julia was the only daughter of Gustaf Johansson Sandelin and Elna Larsdotter Sandelin. She was born in Mockelm, Pjatteryd, Kronoberg, Sweden. Her father and older brother, having come to Kittson County, Minnesota, first, she was the oldest of four children who made the trip to America with her mother in 1889. She married Olie Garrison in Omaha in January, 1923.
Emigration 25 April 1889 from Malmo, Sweden, to Liverpool, England; 3 May 1889 from Liverpool via Londonderry, Ireland, to Quebec, arriving 11 May 1889; Quebec to Emerson, Manitoba; Emerson to Kennedy, Minnesota. The trip to Manitoba was usually on special immigrant trains. Scandinavians chose the Canadian route because the fare was cheaper.
Ship from Liverpool to Quebec was the Polynesian, known as "Roly Poly" because it was notoriously unstable.
