Missionary Who Died While Serving

"Now all those [who] die in the faith go to the prison of spirits to preach to the dead in body, but they are alive in the spirit, and those spirits preach to the spirits that they may live according to God in the spirit..." - Joseph Smith the Prophet

Obituary: Charlotte Dorae MacKinga Lofgreen
Published: Deseret News, Saturday, May 30, 1998

Charlotte Dorae MacKinga Lofgreen, age 66, of Orem, Utah died May 26, 1998 in West Africa due to injuries sustained in a truck accident May 13, 1998 while serving as a senior missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) in the Abidjan, Ivory Coast Mission. She was to be released from her mission June 19, 1998.

Charlotte Lofgreen was born September 22, 1931 in San Francisco, California to Kermit and Bernice Rhodes MacKinga. She grew up in Riverside, California where she joined the LDS Church at the age of 18. She married Ted Lee Lofgreen June 15, 1951. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS temple. Her husband preceded her in death October 13, 1957 when his plane crashed while returning from reserve duty in the Marine Corps at El Toro, CA. He was a Marine pilot studying engineering at San Luis Obispo Polytechnic College in California at the time of his death. Following the death of her husband, Charlotte returned to college to complete her degree and became an elementary school teacher in San Luis Obispo. She later taught for the Church Educational System (CES) at Liahona High School, on the South Pacific island of Tonga for nearly five years. She loved the people there and not only taught English, but served in many church callings, including the Mission Young Women's MIA President. Subsequently she earned her Masters degree from Brigham Young University (BYU) in Provo, Utah and continued to work for CES at the Church College of Hawaii and BYU where she retired in 1996. Throughout the years she taught and/or attended various educational programs in the Phillippines, Israel, China, Mongolia, Peru, and Samoa. She loved to travel and found great joy in serving others.

She was a wonderful mother who taught her daughters what is truly important in life. She was a great example of joy and love to all she met. Having Heavenly Father call her home while on her mission in Africa is consistent with the way she lived her life in the service of others and her love of the gospel.

She is survived by her two daughters: Lorie D. (William) Fowlke and Cheryl L. (Michael) Karr, of Orem, seven grandchildren; Summer Fowlke Jack, Jeremy, Jonathan, Lauren, Joshua, and Jesse Fowlke, Christine Dorae Karr; and one great-grandchild, Josselyn RioDawn Jack.

Funeral service will be held Friday, June 5, 1998 at 10:30 a.m. in the Orem North Stake Center, 1000 N. Main Street, Orem, Utah. Friends may call Thursday evening from 7-9 p.m. at the Walker Sanderson Funeral Home, 646 East 800 North, Orem and Friday at the stake center one hour prior to service.
