John was the first Postmaster of Mellott, Indiana. The town was originally called Rice's Station in Richland Township in Fountain County, Indiana. The name of the town was changed to Mellott in honor of John when the post office was established on November 23, 1882.

John held the position of Postmaster of Mellott from 1882 until May 7, 1885. He returned to the job on April 26, 1889 and held it for four more years until April 14, 1893. He was unable to stay away from the post office for long because he returned to be Postmaster in 1897 and continued until July 9, 1914.
