Gloria was born in Ribeira das Tainhas, a village outside of Vila Franca do Campo, on São Miguel island, Azores to Manuel Correia and Anna Maria de Mello. She immigrated with her sister, Rosa de Jesus, through Ellis Island and then onto New Bedford, MA in 1901. She married in New Bedford in 1905 to Manuel de Mello. She was the mother of 6 children, 4 of whom lived to adulthood. The four boys were Bill Mello, George Mello, Johnnie Mello, and Jack Mello. She died just short of her 92nd birthday in Hemet.
