PACIFIC GROVE - Mrs. Ethel B. Middleton died on April 28, 2010 at age 88. She was married to Admiral Roderick O. Middleton of Pomona Park, Florida, for 39 years until his death in 1978. Mrs. Middleton moved to Canterbury Woods in Pacific Grove in 2006 from Atascadero, California. The Middletons lived in Los Altos, California, for 11 years when he worked for Lockheed after retirement from the Navy. Admiral Middleton worked with National Aeronautics and Space Administration and was Mission Director for the Apollo Program at Cape Canaveral, Florida. In 1962, one of his ships, the USS Noa, picked up John Glenn when he splashed down into the Atlantic Ocean after orbiting the earth in Friendship 7. Admiral Middleton hosted President J.F. Kennedy on the USS Observation Island to observe a Polaris Missile launch in November, 1963, one week prior to his assassination.
Mrs. Middleton was born in Lakewood, NJ, in 1921 and grew up on Norfolk, VA. She attended the College of William and Mary. She met Roderick Middleton while he was a midshipman at the Naval Academy. After his graduation he served on the USS Washington in the Pacific during World War II. Mrs. Middleton lived with their first child, Anne, in Pomona Park during the war. Shortly thereafter, they moved to Cambridge, MA, where he attended graduate school at Harvard. As a Navy wife, Mrs. Middleton also lived in Japan, Massachusetts, Texas, Rhode Island, Maryland, Alabama, Virginia, and Florida, and toured the Mediterranean for six months with her daughter Stephanie while Admiral Middleton was on a good will tour in Europe and Africa in 1965. The Middletons had a son, Roderick O. Middleton, Jr. who died in 1968.
Mrs. Middleton is survived by her daughters, Anne Jackson of Sacramento and Stephanie Middleton of Philadelphia. She was the beloved grandmother of Christopher Beale, Eric Kuenstler, Kevin Kuenstler, Mary Felton, Susannah Chamie, and Adele Carr; and great grandmother of Katherine Beale, Rod Beale, Jeremy Felton, Madeline Felton, Nathaniel Felton, Jordan Chamie, and Willow Kuenstler. Her grandchildren often spent their summers with her, and she took them on trips to Ashland, Oregon,Yosemite, and Hawaii, as well as to Europe and Australia. She never missed her grandchildrens' graduations, weddings or performances. She was an avid gardener, storyteller, traveler, reader, and lover of art, music, and theater. She will be remembered for her generosity of spirit, her great sense of humor, her intellectual curiosity, and her loving devotion to her family and friends.
