Joseph Andrew Plaschak was an airplane mechanic. To boost morale of the troops stationed in Bali, Italy, Joseph flew with several other men in a flyby over the airfield. The aircraft had trouble and crashed into the ocean. All aboard died in the crash.
Joseph was a Corporal in the Us Army Air Cor. in World War II stationed in Tunis Africa as a C 47 airplane mechanic. On May 30, 1944 he and other soldiers and other planes flew in V formation over Italy to boost the morale of our soldiers fighting in Italy. Two of the planes from the formation collided in mid air and fell in the Adriatic Sea off of the coast of Bari, Italy. Nineteen soldiers died in that accident. A Catholic priest said he blessed the waters soon after the accident. He was buried in Italy and in 1947 the bodies buried there were going to be moved. My mother asked that his body be sent home. My mother was his sister Margaret plascak Biegacki. She was taking care of their father who she lived with and he didn't know good English. We weren't allowed to open the casket or traveling container which was sealed so we think we have his body buried in the soldier's plot in Calvary Cemetary on Miles Avenue in Cleveland, Ohio
