Caroline Boness Abel
Birth: May 7, 1811
Death: Jan. 1, 1883

Born in Pommern in 1811, her maiden name has appeared in many different forms from document to document. The general consensus seems to be Boness although it has appeared as Bonness, Bonez, Bonep, Ronez, Bonest and Barnes. Caroline married David Abel before February 1828 as their first child was born later that year. While the family's arrival in America is unclear, daughter Ernestine was born in Germany in 1849 and the family appeared in the 1850 Manitowoc County Census. According to the History of Manitowoc, they were the first to settle in the area later known as Schleswig after the Indians departed. In honor of this the town was originally called Abel. Her son Henry was the first white child born in the area and her daughter's marriage to John Kaemmerer was the first in the area. David and Caroline lost two daughters, Hannah and Ernestine after their arrival in America. John Carl (Johan) also predeceased his parents in 1878. David, Caroline and John are buried together.

Portrait and Biographical Record of Sheboygan County, Excelsior Publishing Co., Chicago, 1894, pp. 231-232:

David Abel, who settled on section 13, in that town, in 1850. The town was originated in the spring of 1856, and was called Abel in honor of the father (David) of the subject (Henry) of this record, but the following year it was changed to Schleswig. David Abel was born in 1799, in Prussia, Germany. In 1849 he emigrated with his family to Sheboygan County, but the following year settled in Manitowoc County, where he lived until his death, which occurred in 1881. The wife and mother died three years later. Their family numbered 12 children, but several of them died in early life
