Songwriter. He penned numerous memorable country music songs, including co-writing (with Harlan Howard) Patsy Cline's hit "I Fall to Pieces" (1961). Born Garland Perry Cochran, he spent part of his childhood living in a Memphis orphanage following his parents divorce. He began playing the guitar at age ten, and would work in oil fields in New Mexico and live in California, before moving to Nashville, where he formed The Cochran Brothers with Eddie Cochran (no relation to him). During the late 1950s, he joined Pamper Music as a songwriter. Among the many hits he wrote include Burl Ives' "Funny Way of Laughing" (1962), Jeannie Seely's "Don't Touch Me" (1966), both winning Grammy Awards, Patsy Cline's "She's Got You" (1962) and "Make the World Go Away" (covered by Ray Price, Eddy Arnold and Elvis Presley). In addition, he co-wrote George Strait's "The Chair" (1985) and "Ocean Front Property" (1988). He was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1974. He was married to singer Jeannie Seely for several years. Cochran died from cancer. (bio by: C.S.)
