USMC Killed in Action Tarawa

PFC Phillip Hayes Krenkle, #818735, was initially listed as MIA. His remains were discovered during one of the early grave consolidations and treated as an unknown. He was buried in the Lone Palm cemetery on Tarawa in Plot 2, Row 2, Grave 9 and assigned the identity X-42. After the war he was disinterred and sent to Hawaii, where he was identified at the Army Central Identification Laboratory. His hometown was Gering, NE.

Graveside Rites For Phillip Hayes Krenkel
The remains of Pfc. Phillip Hayes Krenkel, who was killed in action in the Pacific war theatre November 20, 1943, arrived in Glasco a few days ago and were interred in the Glasco cemetery Dec. 23, 1947. Graveside services were conducted at 1:30 p.m. by Rev. Pittman of the Baptist church at Simpson. The American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars were in charge of the Military ceremonies. Pallbearers were John Gentry, Clyde Gentry, George Gentry, John Louthan, Cecil McClure, and Bruce Finley. Pfc. Krenkel was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Briscoe Krenkel of Alameda, Calif., who are former residents of Simpson. Griffith Funeral Home of Glasco was in charge.

Ironically, Philip Hayes Krenkle was named after his uncle, Philip "Hayes" Krenkle who died in 1918 during World War II at Camp Funston, Fort Riley, Geary County, Kansas.
