Thomas was the 9th child and fifth son of Zach and Mary, enlisted in the Civil War on 28 Jan 1865 and served in Co. E, 144th Regiment of the Indiana Volunteers. In June of that year, while stationed at Stevenson Station, VA, Thomas contacted malaria and that resulted in him suffering with rheumatism, stomach difficulites and bowel problems which led to his discharge on 5 Aug 1865.
