Earl E. Westendorf, son of Viola E. (Jones) Westendorf and Amby Westendorf, was born in Rock Rapids, Iowa, on March 5, 1919. He grew up in Sioux Falls and attended Washington High School. Earl was united in marriage with Gertrude Schliemann on August 1, 1942, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He entered the US Army Air Corps on September 1, 1942, and was stationed in England where he served as a bomber crew chief on B-17's.
After his discharge on September 15, 1945, the couple made their home in the Sioux Falls area. Earl served as a police officer for the City of Sioux Falls for 13 years. He later owned and operated Earl's Texaco, which was located at 8th and Franklin in Sioux Falls. Earl later went into sales, and because of poor health retired in 1978 to Arizona. In 1985 the couple moved back to Sioux Falls. Earl loved western movies, nature and animals.
He was a past member of Wesley United Church, the Moose Lodge, Fraternal Order of Police, and a current member of the VFW Post #628.
Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Gertrude Westendorf, Sioux Falls, 5 children, Gloria Aasen (LeRoy), Sioux Falls, Arthur "Bud" Westendorf (Shirleen), Sioux Falls, Dale R. Westendorf (Gail), Beaumont, Texas, Robert Westendorf (Kim), Tucson, Arizona, Peggy Subart (James), Sioux Falls; 12 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; 9 sisters, Doris Peterson, Sioux Falls, Mary Ann Garity, Sioux Falls, Norma Grey, Sioux Falls, Lois LaCome (Eugene "Bud"), Sioux Falls, Donna Brown, Sioux Falls, Joyce Mullinix, Sioux Falls, Lucille Gilbertson (Ray "Gil"), Sioux Falls, Elaine Donahue (Robert), Portland, Oregon, Darlene Bakken (Enoch), Audabon, Minnesota; 3 brothers, Ambrose Westendorf (Karen), Sioux Falls, Francis Westendorf, Sioux Falls, Larry Westendorf (Marlene), St. Louis, Missouri; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; 3 sisters, net Padgett Scott, Ruby, and Sharon.
Relatives and friends are invited to gather with the family for lunch and fellowship at the VFW Post #628 (3601 S. Minnesota Ave.) following the committal service.
