Hank Wyse
Original name: Henry Wyse
Birth: Mar. 1, 1918
Craighead County
Arkansas, USA
Death: Oct. 22, 2000
Mayes County
Oklahoma, USA

Major League Baseball Player. The right-handed sinkerball pitcher had a 22-10 record in 1945 to help the Chicago Cubs win the National League pennant. He had a 2.68 earned run average, 278 innings pitched and 23 complete games in 34 starts. That year he also stopped Boston's Tommy Holmes' modern-day NL hitting streak at 37 games (since broken by Pete Rose) in the first game of a doubleheader at Wrigley Field on July 12. In addition, he had a no-hit bid broken up on April 27 in the eighth inning when Pittsburgh's Bill Salkeld singled with one out. In the World Series, Detroit's Hank Greenberg hit a three-run homer that tagged Wyse with the Game 2 defeat. He also pitched in relief in Games 6 and 7. He did all this despite sometimes wearing a corset while pitching because of a spinal injury that made him 4-F during the war. He pitched for the Cubs from 1942-47, the Philadelphia Athletics in 1950-51 and the Washington Senators in 1951. He finished his eight-year career with a 79-70 record, 3.52 ERA and 67 complete games.  (bio by: Ron Coons)

On this date 69 years ago -- April 28, 1945 -- the Chicago Cubs' Hank Wyse allowed just an eighth-inning single to Bill Salkeld as he blanked the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-0 on his way to a 22-win season, the last time the Cubs were in the World Series.
