American radio and TV personality, writer and actor who was often referred to by the nickname Shep. Raised in Hammond, Indiana, he was a veteran of the army signal corps In the 1950 he began his career as a radio personality, known for his stories of his youth, commenting on current affairs, and performing silly songs. During his 22 years at WOR-AM in New York, he also broadcast live night club acts from the Limelight in Greenwich Village. He is best known as the co-author of "A Christmas Story" and the grown-up voice of Ralphie. In 2005 he was posthumously inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame.
