Elza Jones, 65, of Benton, was killed in an accident at the Old Ben Mine No. 14 at Buckner late yesterday afternoon.
An inquest will be held by Corner Dave Clayton. It was reported the accident occured when a motor which Jones was riding jumped the track and knocked down a crossbar, releasing top coal which fell on Jones....
Of the family of his parents, his brothers Howell, Herschel, and Roe; and his sisters, Bess, wife of Tom Dixon; and Mary, wife of Carl Johnson; are living.
He was fortunate in his ancestry. He was a grandson of Martha Browning Moore, the first white woman born in Franklin County, Illinois. His great grandfather, John Browning, a pioneer Baptist preacher,settled in Franklin County, Illinois at the Old Jordan Fort in the year 1804. His maternal grandfather Bellamy was a man of high integrity and was widely known because of his activities as a member of the Order of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons.
On September 2, 1905 he married Susan, daughter of Louis H and Sarah Sieler Musselman. To them were born two sons, Dwight and Calvin, and three daughters, Hazel, wife of LR Stenberg; Juanita, wife of Ernest B Freeman; Billie, wife of WM Keeling. He is survived by his wife, his children and eight grandchildren.
In early life he was a valued employee in the office of WP Rend Coal Company. For many years prior to his death he followed the occupation of coal mining. Elza Jones was a kind man of gentle impulses. His friends will long remember him for "to live in hearts we leave behind is not to die."
