Ernest M. Allen died Wednesday at Queen of the Valley Hospital after a lengthy illness. Mr. Allen was born in Avon, Ohio in 1894 and grew up there. He was married to the late Bernice Fehely in 1921. He served with the U.S. Army during World War I in both France and Germany and was discharged at the rant of sergeant. After the war, he came to California and began eliciting in the Pacific Coast Baseball League with the Oakland Oaks, playing an integral part in their 1923 champion season. He later pitched for the San Francisco Seals, and in the mid-1920s played for a team in Tennessee. Upon retiring from baseball, he returned to California and worked for the Alaska Packers Cannery in Alameda. He was also employed as a security guard at the Oakland Naval Air Station until his retirement in 1960. He and his wife made their home in Happy Camp until moving to Yountville in 1974.
He was a member of the Grange in both Happy Camp and Yountville, and the American Association of Retired Persons: the Old Time Baseball Players Association of Wisconsin, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Yountville. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He is survived by one daughter, Betty Ann Williams of Orinda and a Sister, Olga DeChant of Lakeland. Fla. Three grandchildren and one great-grandchild also survive. He was predeceased by his wife, three brothers, and son Ernest, who was killed at Pearl Harbor.
Friends are invited to attend services at 11:30 am Friday at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Yountville, where the Rev. Miller will celebrate a mass of Christian burial. Internment will follow in the family plot at the Yountville Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Treadway and Wigger Funeral Chapel. There will be no visitation.
