Radar and Fire Controlman Second Class Leonard C. McGlone, Jr., was among 1,000 casualties aboard the aircraft carrier the USS Franklin, crippled by Japanese air attacks in the Pacific. He went into the service in October, 1942 and received his boot training in Chicago, Illinois, and his advanced training in radar at the Navy Yard Annex, Washington, D.C. He was buried at sea with full military honors.
Leonard was born in Ohio, July 15, 1920, the son of Leonard C., Sr., and Berenice Olive (Walker) McGlone. He graduated in California from Lemoore High School in 1938 and attended Modesto Junior College in 1941. He was a member of the First Christian Church. He married the former Merle Woods of Modesto in January, 1945.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was survived by two brothers, Willard and Howard, and two sisters, Mary Elizabeth and Hazel.
