Donald was born October 11, 1928, near Albany, Illinois, to Edward and Elizabeth "Bessie" (Kennedy) Cooper. He entered the U.S. Army at age 17 and served in World War II. Upon his discharge from the Army he re-enlisted with the U.S. Navy and served on the USS Missouri in Korea. Don married Eleanor Foster on May 5, 1951, in Morrison, Illinois. She preceded him in death on March 3, 1982. He worked at Eclipse then Penberthy in Prophetstown for about 40 years, retiring in 1991.
Don had been a member of the VFW. He enjoyed hunting in his younger years and was an avid fisherman. He liked working in his garden and taking care of his yard.
Survivors include his three children and their spouses, Steven (Deb) Cooper, Lyndon, Edward (Sue) Cooper, Lyndon, and Tamara (Gregg) Hamstra, Prophetstown; grandchildren and spouses, Shannon (Brandi) Cooper, Brandon (Megan) Cooper, Kerry Simmons, Kim (John) Kontos, and Stephanie Adams; step-grandchildren, Michael Hamstra, Cassandra Hamstra, and Haylee Wakenight; 10 great-grandchildren; and brother, Kenneth (Joyce) Cooper, Fenton. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and sisters, Veronica Violet and Katherin Anderson-Balk.
