Mr. Arrants came from a prominent Scotch family which settled in eastern Tennessee. He grew to manhood in his native state and was educated through subscription schools. When the Civil War broke out, he joined the Confederate Army. He became captain of a company and served until the end of the war. As the population base increased, the business expanded to meet every demand.

He promoted the Selma Gas Works, and became interested in organizing the First National Bank of Selma; becoming a director and then serving as its president to the time of his death.

Mr. Arrants was a prominent factor in the growth of Selma. He was one of the first men in the Valley to appreciate the value of cooperation among the peach and raisin growers, and helped to establish the first Cooperative Fruit-Packing House at Selma; later incorporated as the Selma Fruit Company.
