Ernrst B. McNitt, 74, of New Brighton, died Saturday, December 2, 1978 in the Beaver Falls Unit of The Medical Center of Beaver County following an apparent heart attack.
Born November 14, 1904 in Burnham, Pennsylvania, son of Charles and Flora Baker McNitt, he was superintendent of the New Brighton Area Schools from 1943 until 1962. He was a retired admimistrator of domestic relations of Beaver County following his retirement with the school district.
A resident of New Brighton for the past 55 years, he was a graduate of Indiana University and received an M.E.D. at the University of Pittsburgh. He was a member and an elder of the First Presbyterian Church of New Brighton where he was a Sunday school teacher of the Bethany Class. He was a past president of the New Brighton Rotary Club and past district governor of No.730 Rotary International.
He was a past master of Union Lodge No.259, F&AM, New Brighton and was a 33rd degree Mason. He was a member of the Scottish Rite, New Castle Consistory and the Syria Shrine Temple, Pittsburgh.
Mr. McNitt was active in Scouting and received the Silver Beaver award from Boy Scouts of Allegheny Council.
He belonged to the American Association of Retired Persons, the National Retired Teachers Association, the Pennsylvania Retired Public School Employees Association, the New Brighton Garden Club, the Mifflin County Historical Society. He was past president of the Beaver County Cancer Society and a member of the Phi Delta Kappa Professional Education Fraternity. He also belonged to the New Brighton Recreation Authority and the Merrick Art Gallery Associates and other civic organizations, including the Salvation Army.
He was a member of the Bicentennial Committee of New Brighton and served as chairman of the 125th anniversary celebration for the town.
Surviving are a son, John M. McNitt of Colorado; two daughters, Mrs. George W. (Janet)Churm of Beaver, Mrs. Nancy Miller of New Brighton and 10 grandchildren.
His wife, Vera Myers McNitt, preceded him in death in December of 1947.
A funeral service was held in the First Presbyterian Church in New Brighton with his pastor, Rev. Donald M. Rising, officiating. Interment was in Grove Cemetery, New Brighton.
