Educated at Larissa College, where his father was trustee.

Married 1) Mary Ann Helena Paine on Apr 15, 1872 in Nacogdoches Co., Texas. Together they were the parents of Lenora Fannie Ewing, Smiley Paine Ewing, Virginia Evvie "Virgie" (Ewing) Estes, and Maggie Boyd (Ewing) Purvis. Mary died in 1880.

Married 2) Mattie Cunningham Glover on May 23, 1882. Together they were the parents of Mattie Lula (Ewing) Koepf Sturkie and Samuel Alexander "Sank" Ewing. Mattie died in 1885.
