Roman Catholic Archbishop. He served as the first Archbishop of Los Angeles from 1936 until his death. Ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of San Francisco on June 18, 1899, Cantwell oversaw many changes in the rapidly growing Los Angeles Archdiocese. He was made Bishop of the Monterey-Los Angeles Diocese in 1917. The Diocese was split twice, and it became the present day Archdiocese of Los Angeles in 1936.
