Alice and John arrived in the United States from England on the ship Homeric on May 8, 1924, with their 3 children. Jackie, the oldest, Janet, and Peggy the youngest. They left Southhampton, England on April 30, 1924 arriving in New York. They settled in Paterson, New Jersey.
John W. "Jackie" McFadyen son of John and Alice. Brother of Margaret and Janet. Jackie was a sailor in WWII and was a Golden Glove Champ in Paterson NJ. He was a coach for Don Bosco Tech and a wonderful man. Married once to Virginia Preston they were the best of friends. Unfortunately, they divorced but, they remained friends until Jack's passing.
Jackie was always a favorite of everyone that knew him. I had asked him to be my date for my Sweet 16 party. We looked forward to seeing each other and sadly 16 days before my 16th birthday Jackie passed away. His sisters rushed home from a trip to England, my mom rushed home from a trip to Connecticut. They had a chance to see each other one last time. The night I was supposed to go visit, my mom and I walked into the hospital's doors his sisters were leaving. Jack was gone.
He was a wonderful guy and even though he wasn't my dad. He will always be thought of in my heart and my mind as my father. He never forgot me and always remembered his ex in-laws. Every St. Patrick's Day he had green carnations sent to his mother-in-law and Christmas always bought a can of Prince Albert tobacco for my grandpa. He never forgot a little something for me either.
Recently Jackie's sister Janet gave me such a lovely gift. I was so very touched. My mom and Jackie were married several months before his sister was. At Janet's wedding my mom and Jackie signed the guest book. As Gin and Jack with an added "& Sharon". I'm not sure if my mom was pregnant or they were just hoping, but they told Janet that they had decided if they were blessed with a little girl, her name would be Sharon. That was more than 15 years before I was born. One Sunday Janet showed me the entry into her Wedding book, it was my mom's handwriting alright and every time I think of it I cry.
He never married again and never had any children. His memory will live forever in my mind. He's sadly missed by his sister, Janet.
