Deceased Name: Gary Allen West Jr., and Justin Aaron Bedsole: Mobile County brothers-in-law killed in Monroe County wreck

Mobile County brothers-in-law killed in Monroe County wreck

Two brothers-in-law and lifelong friends died Friday night when their pickup truck ran off a dark Monroe County 1 and struck trees, authorities said.

Their deaths left 21-year-old Leslie West Bedsole without her only sibling and her husband of less than three months, the families' pastor said.

Gary Allen West Jr., 24, of Saraland and Justin Aaron Bedsole, 21, of Semmes died in the 9:50 p.m. wreck seven miles south of Perdue Hill, Alabama State Trooper Curtis Summerville said.

West, who was driving a 2005 Chevrolet PK, "may have been overcorrecting for something," when the accident occurred, Summerville said, "but why he left the roadway we don't know."

Family members gathered Saturday afternoon to make funeral arrangements.

"Leslie's just lost," said Joey Turman, pastor of Pathway Church in Semmes, where the two men and their families attended services. "But the thing about Leslie - and this is one of the reasons I believe Justin fell so in love with her - is Leslie has such a great faith. In the last few hours, I've been able to witness a young lady who has such a tremendous faith in God."

Justin and Leslie Bedsole "had such a hope for the future. You could tell they were going to have a wonderful life together," Turman said. "Justin would just brag on his Leslie because he loved her so much."

West, who preferred to be called Allen, was Bedsole's best friend, Turman said. It was a natural friendship; the pair shared faith, baseball and football, among other interests.

Both played baseball and football at their high schools - Bedsole at Mary G. Montgomery and West at Citronelle - and West continued to play at college.

Bedsole was attending Auburn University, family said. West graduated in 2005 from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he played both sports.

West married his wife, Jessica Earle West, last year, Turman said.

"He was madly in love with her," Turman said.

On a recent mission trip to Honduras, which West attended with his father and grandfather, West said that he and his wife "were going to start their family," Turman said.

West loved children and was found many nights on that same trip, after a full day of work, "playing with the children and looking for ways he could bless them," Turman said. "He was a champion."

But Bedsole, he said, "was a cowboy. He was born in the wrong time. He loved all Westerns."

In addition to his wife, Bedsole is survived by his parents, Christopher and Kimelia Bedsole, of Semmes; a sister, Jenna Christine Bedsole, of Auburn; grandparents, Billy Joe and Sue DuBose of Semmes, Charles and Theresa Christie of Mobile and Charles and Sylvia Dobbs of Pensacola; and a great-grandmother, Lillian DuBose of Mobile.

West is survived by his wife, Jessica; his parents, Gary and Benita West, all of Saraland; a sister, Leslie West Bedsole, of Auburn; grandparents, Gene and Toni Stokley and Charles and Lois West, all of Saraland.

Visitation for both men will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Pathway Church, 7200 Moffett Road. The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church, and interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens, 10535 Celeste Road, Saraland.

Donations can be made to the Pathway Church College Fund and in West's honor to Mary G. Montgomery High School, according to family. To make donations to the church's fund, call 649-8867 or visit www.pathwayministries.us.

The fund, Turman said, is for "students who are committing their lives to doing great things, like these two men did."

Three years after his high school graduation, Kendrick Dunklin hasn't forgotten the class cowboy, Justin Aaron Bedsole, and the impression Bedsole left on Mary G. Montgomery High School.

"Justin had this cowboy attitude," Kendrick said Wednesday. "A lot of people thought he was unintelligent because he played sports, but he was one of the smartest people in our class. He was an all-around great guy."

Bedsole, 21, and his 24-year-old brother-in-law, Gary Allen West, died Friday when their pickup truck ran off Monroe County Road 1 near Perdue Hill and collided with trees, according to state troopers.

Members of Bedsole's high school class are holding a memorial service for him at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Mary G. Montgomery High School Auditorium, said Dunklin, who is the 2005 class president.

"When (Bedsole) died, our class was trying to figure out a way to do something for him and his family," Dunklin said. "We were awfully close to Justin. We went to the wake and the funeral and there were just so many people - all of our class couldn't even make it. We decided to do something on the weekend, when everyone could come."

Dunklin said he expects several people to speak and sing at the service, and questions should be e-mailed to him at [email protected].

Family members have also requested that donations should be made to the Pathway Church College Fund or to Mary G. Montgomery High School, in Bedsole's honor.
