Oliver was born to Peter & Hilma Johnson. He had 4 brothers and one sister. He grew up in the Park Rose area of Portland & lost his mother at a very young age. He graduated from Parkrose High School. Oliver went to work for Bethlehem Steel as a young man where he did some business with J.R. Roebling Company. There he met a beautiful young lady Janet Legler.

In 1942 Oliver went into the Navy to serve his country during World War II as a a torpedoman on PT boat #75, Squadron 13. He spent much of this time in the Aleutians and the Philippines. Before he left he asked Janet to marry him. Not knowing how long he would be gone, they kept in touch for three long years through hundreds of letters. Not having an official engagement without a ring & not being able to give her one while serving during the war, Oliver had to ask Janet's mother to give her the ring for him. Finally, in 1945 he was able to make it home from the South Pacific to Portland to marry the love of his life. Oliver Johnson & Janet Legler were married April 3, 1945 at Trinity Episcopal Church. They had two daughters. Oliver was pre-deceased by his daughter Nadine Louise in 1982.

Oliver immediately after he was discharged from the Navy on September 13, 1945, continued to work as a salesman at Bethleham Steel in Portland and for about 13 years in Spokane, WA. After 42 years with Bethlehem, he retired in 1976 and moved back to Portland and got to spend many happy years watching his granddaughters grow up and be close to all his family. In retirement Oliver enjoyed bowling and golf. Both him and Janet were busy with church activities with St. Andrews Presbyterian Church and spent many happy times at their vacation home in Manzanita, OR. Oliver was very talented with stained glass and made dozens of beautiful windows and lamps for his family and friends.
