Col. George R. Anderson
BOSSIER CITY, LA - George Robert Anderson (USAF Col., ret.) was born May 3, 1922 in St. Charles, IL to Robert Beith and Fannie Sharp Anderson. Straight from high school he enlisted in the US Army for the Air Corps in September 1940 and completed flying school in 1943. As aircraft commander with the 5th Air Force, 90th Bombardment Group, the Jolly Rogers he flew 54 B-24 combat missions in the Southwest Pacific Area and the Philippines during WWII. Loyalty and service to country led to enlistment into the US Air Force.
From 1946 through 1953 George was assigned to HQ Strategic Air Command in Omaha, NE. Through the later 1950s he attended KC-135 flight school at Castle Air Force Base preparing him for his next assignment of converting the refueling fleet from KC-97s to KC-135s at Bunker Hill AFB, IN. During the 1950's, his duties included piloting both B-47 and B-52 aircraft, working as chief of maintenance, as bombardment squadron commander, as well as completing a B.S. Degree in Business.
George was chosen to attend the Industrial War College in Fort Meyer, VA in 1964, graduating published in the summer of 1965 with an M.S. Degree in Business Administration. He was then transferred to Tinker AFB, OK taking the new position of Weapons System Manager at the Air Logistic Center. After three years, his last assignment took him to Kadena Air Force Base on the island of Okinawa at the height of the Vietnam War. Supporting flying missions during the Arc Light missions he occasionally piloted an aircraft to maintain his flight status, turning control of the aircraft to the crew before the drop zone.
In the summer of 1969 he decided it was time to call it quits. He and his wife, Alice retired and returned to Midwest City, OK where he took a couple of teaching positions in the Mid-Del School District, and teaching at Oscar Rose Junior college.
George and Alice retired to a small acreage in Lufkin, TX, where he enjoyed being a gentleman farmer. They joined the local country club and spent their time golfing, raising cattle and round dancing. They greatly enjoyed their motor home and traveled extensively, visiting family and friends.
George was dedicated to his country as is obvious by his participation in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam Wars. In later life he became more intensely involved with family and friends, to everyone's pleasure. He was extremely well read, consuming books covering a broad variety of subjects.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Harold Anderson, and sisters Marion (Dub) Capps and Grace (Vern) Kozak.
George is survived by his devoted wife of 71 years, Alice; three sons, Ken, and wife Pam of Bossier City, LA; David, and wife Martha of Oklahoma City, OK and Rob of Washougal, WA; eight grandchildren and soon-to-be four great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 23, 2014 at Hill Crest Memorial Chapel with his grandson, Pastor Christian Anderson, officiating. The family will be receiving friends at 1:00 p.m. the hour prior to service. Inurnment at Hill Crest Memorial Park will be held at a later date.
