Death: Jul. 20, 1905

Samuel Blunk, one of the oldest and most famous war veterans of Boone county, passed away at his home in the fifth ward, at noon Thursday, July 20th, after a painful illness. Mr. Blunk was a veteran of two wars, having served in the Mexican war under General Taylor. He was born in Harrison county, Indiana, February 28, 1823, and was in his 83rd year at the time of his death. He was married to Miss Rachel Ann Hughes and to them were born nine children, three of whom, Taylor and Samuel Blunk of this city, and Effie Patterson of Des Moines, with the aged widow survive to mourn his death. After the close of the Mexican war in 1855, the family came to Boone county where they since resided. Thirty six years ago he purchased the home on South Main street where he died. In 1862 he enlisted in Company D 32 Iowa Volunteers, and served with honor to the close of the war. In the battle of Pleasant Hill he was severely wounded in the right arm and came home and lived a quiet and retired life since. About five years ago he suffered a stroke of paralysis, from which he never fully recovered, but has been gradually failing since until death finally claimed him. The funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock, conducted by the Rev. D.C. Eddy, burial in East Linwood.
