The only boy in a family of three children, Douglas was the son of Norman and Mildred Devoe of St. Hubert, Quebec, Canada who enlisted in the US Marine Corps on January 19, 1968 in Albany NY. He arrived in Vietnam on July 18 1968 and was assigned for duty with Company E, 2d Battalion, 26th Marines until he was reassigned on September 8 of the same year to Company C, 1st Battalion, 9th Marines, 3d MARDIV (Rein) FMF.
On September 30, while clearing a Landing Zone in northern Quang Tri Province a falling tree struck PFC Devoe on the side of his head injuring him requiring medical evacuation. Evacuated to the U.S. Navy hospital ship AH-17 U.S.S. Sanctuary he died of on board of cerebral malaria having contacted the illness in the field.
