It is said that "At Cold Harbor, Grant lost 8,000 men in the first half hour. He did not want to admit he lost the battle, so he let all his wounded lay on the field of battle for 3 days. Many died because he would not admit a defeat..."

Also, see online "Battle of Cold Harbor: The Folly and Horror", from the Civil War Times Magazine ( written by Robert N. Thompson:
Calvin "Frank" married Charlotte Almira Croninger in Yankee Springs, Berry, MI, on September 20, 1868.

6 WARNER children:
1. Sarah Eliza Warner (stillborn) (6/27/1869-6/27/1869).
2. Otis Franklin Warner (10/29/1870-7/23/1938).
3. Don Tracy Warner (4/24/1875-11/2/1941).
4. John Calvin Warner (2/23/1882-1/24/1964).
5. Myra Louise Warner (1/18/1885-7/28/1949).
6. Henry Donnelly "Harry" [Sr.] Warner B-8/22/1890.

Sarah Eliza, named for her two grandmothers, was stillborn on the Croninger farm in Cascade Twp., Kent, MI, and is buried in the Whitneyville cemetery in that area.

Calvin and Almira lived for some time in Kent Co., MI until he purchased land and farmed in Wheatfield Township, Ingham, MI.

His Civil War wounds were such that one leg was amputated in 1890; two years later the second. He died just before an arm was scheduled to be amputated, leaving his family fatherless. Note the two pads he walked on after the amputations in the picture.

Contrary to present day rumor, Calvin did not die from diabetes. His war wounds caused a chronic blood infection, which no medicine of that time could heal. Read the "obituary" to the right, above.
