ELIZABETHTOWN -- Dr. Robert J. Lesniak, 64, of 4336 Snavely Road, associate professor emeritus at Penn State Harrisburg, died Wednesday in Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. A university statement characterized him as one of the best known and widely respected members of the faculty in the School of Behavioral Sciences and Education. Serious illness prompted Lesniak's retirement in December, but his colleagues began a scholarship fund in honor of his commitment to students. Lesniak's varied career at Penn State Harrisburg included service as acting associate dean for research and graduate studies (1986-87), acting division head for behavioral sciences and education (1988-90), coordinator of the master's degree program in teaching and curriculum (1972-87), director of the doctoral program in adult education (1984-88), and coordinator of the master's program in training and development from 1985 until his retirement. He was most proud of his accomplishments in program development. Having previously served as the associate director of the Urban Teaching Preparation Program at Syracuse University, Lesniak was first attracted to Penn State Harrisburg by its urban program in teaching operating in the Harrisburg School District. He worked to expand requirements in field experience and to establish three basic preparation-for-teaching courses, which are still program requirements today. Another major curricular accomplishment came in 1985 when nurses from Hershey Medical Center requested a specialized program for teaching. With the help of the division head, Lesniak created the master's program in training and development which still enrolls 150 students each year. "The one thing I have learned is the importance of faculty interacting with their students," Lesniak said. "I planned to come to Penn State for just three years, but because of the friendly people in the area, I have stayed for 31." He participated in the Reorganization Workshop for Desegregation of Harrisburg Schools and, with his wife and two other couples, founded the Happiness Street Preschool, which operated in Palmyra for 11 years. He was elected to the Lower Dauphin School Board in 1978, served for six years, two as president, and received two service awards from the district. He chaired a committee for the Pennsylvania Task Force for Adult Basic Education, which wrote a plan for adult education; received the Faculty Service Award from his college in 1994 and was honored by the Association of Teacher Educators for 20 years of service, including a year as its president in 1981. Last year, he was presented the Life Membership Award by the American Society for Training and Development for his committee work. He was a member of St. Joan of Arc Roman Catholic Church, Hershey, and a graduate of Hope College, Holland, Mich., with a doctorate from Syracuse University. Surviving are his wife, Mary Ann Quinn Lesniak; a son, John F. at home; two daughters, Kristin Phillips of Harrisburg and Nicole M. Lesniak of Arlington, Va.; his mother, Mary Hinotsky Lesniak of Herkimer, N.Y.; and a sister, Anna Lyga of Herkimer. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday in his church. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. Viewing will be from 4: 30 to 8 p.m. Friday in Matinchek & Daughter Funeral Home and Cremation Services, Middletown, where the rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Dr. Robert J. Lesniak Scholarship Fund, Penn State Harrisburg, 777 W. Harrisburg Pike, Middletown 17057.
