My 9th great grandfather's grave
Stark, William Sr. Tombstone, Wightman Burying Gds (80 KB): William Stark, Sr. [1664 - 1730] was the son of the Stark Family patriarch, Aaron Stark, Sr. Photo of the Tombstone of William Stark, Sr. of Groton, New London Co., CT located in the Wightman Burying Ground near Old Mystic, CT. The photo has been digitally altered to enhance the Inscription, barely visible in the original photo. After the word "year" could be the word "of" which was not visible in the original. Contributed by Todd Travis, Potsdam, St. Lawrence County, NY. Dated about 1996-98. William Stark was born at Mystic, Connecticut, near the present Groton. He was the founder of the Baptist Church in Connecticut, and meetings of the society were for some time held in his house. He and four others obtained in 1704 an order or decree of the court recognizing the Baptist Church as a separate organization. He apparently lived all his life near Groton.
His son, Christopher was born there in 1698, and there in 1730, William died. His tombstone, still standing, is the oldest one in the churchyard, and has this inscription: "Here lieth ye body of William Stark, who died September 8th, 1730, in ye 66th year of his age."
