Joseph Griffith, Jr. was the son of Joseph and Catherine Burson Griffith of Gunpowder Falls, MD and Belmont Co. OH. The parents lived in Belmont County and went to Muskingum County. Joseph, Jr.was in Muskingum County until about 1839 according to deeds. He began to buy property in Guernsey and went to Old Washington before 1840. He is shown in the census for that county from 1840 until 1860 and appears to have been a prosperous man. He married twice, first to "Eliza" and second to "Nancy". The monument is inscribed on all sides showing his children. The names and dates are worn.
