Services for Mr. Joe Christful, 78, of Barwick, will be held 11 a.m. Aug. 20, 2011, at First Missionary Baptist Church, 2061 Kendrick St. in Barwick.
Mr. Christful passed on Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2011, at his daughter Latricia's home after a lengthy illness. Born in Brooks County on Sept. 20, 1932, to the late Pasco and Eugenia Christful, he was often referred to as "Mr. Joe Christful," "Mr. Bubba," or "Cluck." He loved talking on his CB radio and his code name was "Soul Man." He united himself with the Lord at an early age by joining First A.B. Church and served in several capacities. He ended his tenure as the chairman of the Deacon Board when he could not serve any more.
Mr. Bubba was a farmer by trade and loved people and making people laugh. He would always be the flower of the party no matter what. His hobbies included raccoon hunting, fishing, shooting pool, talking on the phone, riding his lawn mower and telling jokes. He was a jokester and always had a joke for anyone who was willing to listen. He also liked to tell of his baseball skills and how fast he could run the bases. He was an honorary deputy sheriff of Thomas County and would always pull out his badge to prove it. He was well known for helping people in the community and anyone who was in need. On July 3, 1954, he married Ms. Peggy Jean McCloud of Brooks County. He was the father of 13 kids and one son preceded him in death.
He was also the father of many others in the community and that was evident after he became ill. He leaves behind a multitude of grand-children, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He protected many, loved many, and gave to many.
The family will receive friends at Hadley's Funeral Home, 622 N. Broad St. in Thomasville, from 6 to 8 p.m. on Aug. 19, 2011. Family and friends are asked to assemble at 10 a.m. on the day of the service at 121 Altman Ave. in Thomasville.
