Joseph served as a First Lieutenant & Pilot on P-47D #42-23220, 310th Fighter Squadron, 58th Fighter Group, Fifth Fighter Command, Fifth Air Force, U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II.

He enlisted in the Army on January 14, 1942 in Wilmington, Delaware. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Clerk and as Single, without dependents.

He was married sometime after his enlistment.

He was "Killed In Action" over Lingayen Gulf, Luzon, Philippine Islands by friendly fire from a U.S. Navy aircraft while serving as a pilot of a P-47 Thunderbolt fighter.

He had served in the Air Corps for three years at the time of his death and was decorated with the Air Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster and a Purple Heart.
