UA to hold graduation, memorial today -

TUSCALOOSA | A commencement will be held at 6 tonight at Coleman Coliseum for University of Alabama students whose May graduation ceremony was delayed because of the April 27 tornado.
Also, a candlelight service will be held at 8:30 tonight on the steps of Amelia Gayle Gorgas Library in remembrance of the six UA students who died in the tornado.
Two graduation ceremonies will be held Saturday at the coliseum for undergraduates who finished their studies during the summer.
The six students who died in the April 27 tornado — Scott Atterton, Danielle Downs, Ashley Harrison, Melanie Nicole Mixon, Morgan Marlene Sigler and Marcus Smith — will receive posthumous degrees in the 9 a.m. ceremony.

— "I love you as big as the sky."
They are words on a pink bracelet worn by Darlene Harrison. They are the words that her daughter Ashley used to tell her as she was growing up.
Nearly three months after her Ashley's death, they are the words she clings to along with the memories created along the way.
Ashley Harrison, 22 — a Dallas native and senior at the University of Alabama — was killed April 27 when a tornado swept through Tuscaloosa and badly damaged the home she was taking shelter in.
Minutes earlier, Ashley had been talking to mother on the phone while hiding in a closet.
"She said that a tornado was heading their way," Darlene Harrison remembered. Her daughter reassured her, "'I love you. I love you, mom. I'm going to be OK.'"
But hours after the twister touched down, Darlene and David Harrison were not able to contact their daughter.
When phone calls turned up nothing, they immediately flew to Alabama.
"When I couldn't reach her, I had a feeling that something wasn't right," David Harrison said.
In the darkness of night, the family searched for hours through the damaged area.
They didn't know that Ashley's body had been found hours earlier in a field, nearly 50 yards from the home where she had sought shelter.
Ashley was a graduate of Ursuline Academy in Dallas. She was a pre-law student, and excelled as an athlete playing lacrosse and volleyball.
The 22-year-old also volunteered her time to numerous organizations. Her parents are keeping that spirit alive.
Four scholarships have been set up in Ashley's name to help young people like her pay for school.
An auction is being held Thursday July 21 at Gilley's in Dallas to raise money for the cause. The items being offered range from Dallas Cowboys tickets to autographs and jerseys from players on the Alabama Crimson Tide football team.
All of the proceeds will benefit the Ashley Harrison Scholarship Fund.

The Dallas woman was killed in one of many deadly tornadoes that ripped through Alabama last week.
Hundreds attended the rememberance today. The college senior planned to become a lawyer and was just days away from graduating from the University of Alabama.
Harrison was one of 41 killed when the tornado hit Tuscaloosa on April 27.

A vivacious and loving young woman, Ashley was a member of Phi Mu Sorority and Delta Sigma Pi Business Fraternity, and an employee of the law firm of Phelps, Jenkins, Gibson & Fowler, L.L.P. in Tuscaloosa. Her dream was to earn a law degree.

Friends remembered Ashley Harrison - a 22-year-old Ursuline graduate killed by Wednesday's massive tornado in Tuscaloosa, Alabama -- as someone destined for greatness.
A loyal and down-to-earth friend.
A caring and compassionate volunteer.
A dedicated pre-law student who won nearly any argument.
"Beyond her high intellect and her ability to excel in whatever she chose to pursue, she had the most amazing personality," said Colin Peek, a close friend. "She just had an elegance about her."
Harrison was days away from graduation at the University of Alabama, where she studied economics. Her family confirmed her death Thursday - after traveling to Tuscaloosa, Ala., to search for her - and word of the tragedy spread quickly in both Alabama and Dallas.
"She was wonderful," said Betsy Hoag, the mother of one of Harrison's good friends at the Ursuline Academy of Dallas. "It's going to very difficult for those left behind to fill that void."
Harrison grew up in Dallas, the daughter of Dave and Darlene Harrison. She attended Christ the King Elementary School and then Ursuline, the Catholic girls' high school in North Dallas, graduating in 2007.
She excelled in the classroom and played lacrosse and volleyball. Friends described her as "joyful," "vivacious" and "determined."
"You knew this girl was going somewhere," Hoag said.

DALLAS - A former student at Ursuline Academy in Dallas was killed in the history making tornado that devastated Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
Ashley Harrison, 22, was a student at the University of Alabama and a 2007 graduate of Ursuline Academy in Dallas. Harrison was studying economics at the university.
The University of Alabama with more than 30,000 students announced Thursday that commencement has been moved to Aug. It also canceled next week's final exams.
"She was the light of many people's lives and has a heart as big as the sky," her uncle Marion Perret told News 8.
He says the family searched for her throughout Wednesday night and into Thursday morning.
She was thrown nearly 100 yards away from the home she was hunkered down in and suffered a fatal injury to her neck.
Harrison called her parents Wednesday and informed them of the weather heading to the state. She said she was going to hide in a closet.
Her boyfriend, Alabama football player Carson Tinker and another friend were also tossed from the home but survived.
At Ursuline Academy Thursday, students stopped what they were doing to pray when they heard the news.
"We prayed for her eternal peace," said Principal Betty Bourgeois.
Harrison had been a Lacrosse player while at the Dallas Catholic school.
"It was shocking," Bourgeois said of Harrison's death.
Her friends said to know her was to love her.
"Remember her as a beautiful young woman," Bourgeois said. "She was full of goodness, full of life, full of happiness of being," she said. "Whoever she was with she brought joy."
Harrison was an only child.
There were 13 other Ursuline students in Tuscaloosa when the tornado hit. All of the other students survived.
Bourgeois said many students expressed a desire to do something to help after hearing the news.
"One dad I talked to says he encouraged his daughter to do volunteer work," she said of one former Ursuline student that survived the tornado. "'Go do something,' because she was in the dark and she was without water or electricity. He said, 'Go find something to do for someone else. You'll be happy.'"
In her year book, Harrison wrote, "Some people come into your life and quickly go, but some stay for a while and leave footprints on your heart and forever you are never the same."
Harrison's friends said she left an indelible mark on their lives.

DALLAS - A former student at Ursuline Academy in Dallas was killed in the history making tornado that devastated Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
Ashley Harrison, 22, was a student at the University of Alabama and a 2007 graduate of Ursuline Academy in Dallas. Harrison was studying economics at the university.
The University of Alabama with more than 30,000 students announced Thursday that commencement has been moved to Aug. It also canceled next week's final exams.
"She was the light of many people's lives and has a heart as big as the sky," her uncle Marion Perret told News 8.
He says the family searched for her throughout Wednesday night and into Thursday morning.
She was thrown nearly 100 yards away from the home she was hunkered down in and suffered a fatal injury to her neck.
Harrison called her parents Wednesday and informed them of the weather heading to the state. She said she was going to hide in a closet.
Her boyfriend, Alabama football player Carson Tinker and another friend were also tossed from the home but survived.
At Ursuline Academy Thursday, students stopped what they were doing to pray when they heard the news.
"We prayed for her eternal peace," said Principal Betty Bourgeois.
Harrison had been a Lacrosse player while at the Dallas Catholic school.
"It was shocking," Bourgeois said of Harrison's death.
Her friends said to know her was to love her.
"Remember her as a beautiful young woman," Bourgeois said. "She was full of goodness, full of life, full of happiness of being," she said. "Whoever she was with she brought joy."
Harrison was an only child.
There were 13 other Ursuline students in Tuscaloosa when the tornado hit. All of the other students survived.
Bourgeois said many students expressed a desire to do something to help after hearing the news.
"One dad I talked to says he encouraged his daughter to do volunteer work," she said of one former Ursuline student that survived the tornado. "'Go do something,' because she was in the dark and she was without water or electricity. He said, 'Go find something to do for someone else. You'll be happy.'"
In her year book, Harrison wrote, "Some people come into your life and quickly go, but some stay for a while and leave footprints on your heart and forever you are never the same."
Harrison's friends said she left an indelible mark on their lives.

UA to hold graduation, memorial today -

TUSCALOOSA | A commencement will be held at 6 tonight at Coleman Coliseum for University of Alabama students whose May graduation ceremony was delayed because of the April 27 tornado.
Also, a candlelight service will be held at 8:30 tonight on the steps of Amelia Gayle Gorgas Library in remembrance of the six UA students who died in the tornado.
Two graduation ceremonies will be held Saturday at the coliseum for undergraduates who finished their studies during the summer.
The six students who died in the April 27 tornado — Scott Atterton, Danielle Downs, Ashley Harrison, Melanie Nicole Mixon, Morgan Marlene Sigler and Marcus Smith — will receive posthumous degrees in the 9 a.m. ceremony.

— "I love you as big as the sky."
They are words on a pink bracelet worn by Darlene Harrison. They are the words that her daughter Ashley used to tell her as she was growing up.
Nearly three months after her Ashley's death, they are the words she clings to along with the memories created along the way.
Ashley Harrison, 22 — a Dallas native and senior at the University of Alabama — was killed April 27 when a tornado swept through Tuscaloosa and badly damaged the home she was taking shelter in.
Minutes earlier, Ashley had been talking to mother on the phone while hiding in a closet.
"She said that a tornado was heading their way," Darlene Harrison remembered. Her daughter reassured her, "'I love you. I love you, mom. I'm going to be OK.'"
But hours after the twister touched down, Darlene and David Harrison were not able to contact their daughter.
When phone calls turned up nothing, they immediately flew to Alabama.
"When I couldn't reach her, I had a feeling that something wasn't right," David Harrison said.
In the darkness of night, the family searched for hours through the damaged area.
They didn't know that Ashley's body had been found hours earlier in a field, nearly 50 yards from the home where she had sought shelter.
Ashley was a graduate of Ursuline Academy in Dallas. She was a pre-law student, and excelled as an athlete playing lacrosse and volleyball.
The 22-year-old also volunteered her time to numerous organizations. Her parents are keeping that spirit alive.
Four scholarships have been set up in Ashley's name to help young people like her pay for school.
An auction is being held Thursday July 21 at Gilley's in Dallas to raise money for the cause. The items being offered range from Dallas Cowboys tickets to autographs and jerseys from players on the Alabama Crimson Tide football team.
All of the proceeds will benefit the Ashley Harrison Scholarship Fund.

RICHARDSON— Friends and relatives gathered at Restland Funeral Home in Richardson to remember Ashley Harrison, a 2007 graduate of Dallas' Ursuline Academy.
The Dallas woman was killed in one of many deadly tornadoes that ripped through Alabama last week.
Hundreds attended the rememberance today. The college senior planned to become a lawyer and was just days away from graduating from the University of Alabama.
Harrison was one of 41 killed when the tornado hit Tuscaloosa on April 27.

Her dream was to earn a law degree.

Friends remembered Ashley Harrison - a 22-year-old Ursuline graduate killed by Wednesday's massive tornado in Tuscaloosa, Alabama -- as someone destined for greatness.
A loyal and down-to-earth friend.
A caring and compassionate volunteer.
A dedicated pre-law student who won nearly any argument.
"Beyond her high intellect and her ability to excel in whatever she chose to pursue, she had the most amazing personality," said Colin Peek, a close friend. "She just had an elegance about her."
Harrison was days away from graduation at the University of Alabama, where she studied economics. Her family confirmed her death Thursday - after traveling to Tuscaloosa, Ala., to search for her - and word of the tragedy spread quickly in both Alabama and Dallas.
"She was wonderful," said Betsy Hoag, the mother of one of Harrison's good friends at the Ursuline Academy of Dallas. "It's going to very difficult for those left behind to fill that void."
Harrison grew up in Dallas, the daughter of Dave and Darlene Harrison. She attended Christ the King Elementary School and then Ursuline, the Catholic girls' high school in North Dallas, graduating in 2007.
