Boulder News of April 5, 1872:
"Last Friday Mrs. Mary Bard, wife of Dr. R. Bard, well known to the people of Boulder county, was found dead in bed at her residence a mile east of this place. Her husband had been called away from home the evening previous and was not present at the time.
Mrs. Bard was a lady upwards of 60 years in age and had not for some time been enjoying good health, though there had been no occasion for any alarm regarding her condition. The evening previous she had been visiting at a neighbor's, Mr. C. P. Cluff's, and then appeared to be in as good health as usual, only complaining of being tired.
Friday forenoon, Albert Fleck, who occupied one part of the house in which the deceased resided, noticed that no one appeared to be stirring in the house and fearing that all was not right, he spoke to Mr. Cluff's family about it. When Mrs. Cynthia Cluff called at the house to offer assistance if it should be needed she found Mrs. Bard lying in bed dead.
A coroner's jury was summoned, who returned a verdict that the deceased came to her death by disease believed to be apoplexy."
