Confederate Army Captain of Company K of the 20th Tennessee Cavalry, serving until the end of the Civil War.

He went back to farming in Henry County, Tennessee after the war.

In 1876 he was appointed Deputy Sheriff. After four years, he was elected Sheriff of Henry County, where he served several terms
