OBITUARY
Mrs. Susan McCluskey
Susan Saunders was born in Kentucky, Oct. 24, 1821, and died in Burt County, Nebr., May 6, 1909, being at the time of her death, 87 years, 6 months, and 12 days of age.
Dates are not available by which we can ascertain exactly the events of her life, but from the best that we can gather, she was married, about the year 1840, or when about the age of 20, to Allen Riley, and to this union was born two sons, one of which died several year ago, and is buried at Glenwood, Iowa, the other Mr. Frank Riley, lives near Onawa, and was with her at the time of her death, and attended the funeral. Evidently her first husband died about the year 1845, and some time after which must have been about or in the year 1850, she was married to Patrick McCluskey, and to this union was born one son, Mr. Arthur McCluskey, who lives near Decatur, and with whom she has lived for a number of years, and at whose home she passed away. Mr. McCluskey was for many years a soldier, serving in the Mexican war, and afterward in the various Indian wars of the frontier, and his only son was born in the old Military Fort Carnie, but was at the time of the civil war living as a private citizen, but feeling the patriotic fire, he offered himself for service, when Lincoln called for seventy-five thousand men, and so went to Washington, D.C., but being rejected on account of disability, remained in the National Soldiers home at Washington.
Many years ago while living in Atchinson county, Missouri, near Rockport, she united with the Methodist Episcopal Church. And though she never removed her letter from that place, she may still be accounted a member of that church.
The funeral was held in the Methodist Church at Decatur, on Friday afternoon May 7, attended by both the remaining sons, with their families, and also a large company of neighbors and friends, the pastor preaching the funeral sermon, assisted by Rev. Swank, who offered a prayer. After which the body was laid to rest in the beautiful cemetary at Decatur to await the time when the Father of all shall call forth the body again, that shall be.
Mr McCluskey wishes us to extend general thanks, and a word of appreciation, to the neighbors for all their kindness, and especially to the ladies who helped with the singing, which he pronounces as pleasing, and highly appreciated.
