R. J. Hotchkiss, Architect Here Since '84, Dies
The death of Roy J. Hotchkiss, of 127 North Oak Park avenue, marks the passing of the designer of many Oak Park homes, stores and buildings which stand as monuments to his long career as an architect. Mr. Hotchkiss died in his sleep on Thursday of last week.
Born in Richmond, Ind., in 1877, Mr. Hotchkiss came to Oak Park in 1884. He attended school in the old Temperance Hall at Lake and Forest avenue.
Starting as an apprentice with E. E. Roberts, architect, whose office was then located in a little frame building at Madison and Oak Park avenue, he later established his own business at 115 North Oak Park avenue. In 1910 he married Lena Virginia Latham who died in 1928.
In addition to the many homes in Oak Park and other towns which Mr. Hotchkiss designed, he originated the plans for churches in Elmhurst and Morris, Ill., and built the Church of the Good Shepherd at East Randolph (sic) six years ago, which has received much favorable attention. The Honor Roll for World War II, located at Lake and Grove was also sketched by him. Numerous buildings in Oak Park avenue were of his design. Strickland's Lake street store; the remodeling of the Public Service salesroom; Postlewait's chapel and the Medical Arts building are among them.
Mr. Hotchkiss was ill for about 8 weeks before his death. He is survived by his two sisters, May E. Hotchkiss and Mrs. Frank A. Adams.
Services on Saturday took place at the Postlewait chapel and interment followed at Forest Home.
