Vernon attended the Paolo local schools, graduating from high school in 1900. He spent 39 years in the railway mail service. He received his first appointment on the Kansas City Southern railway in 1904. He left Paola around 1912. He retired in 1943, and then worked for the Kansas City Terminal railway about five years as assistant baggage agent. Since 1948, he had been an employee of the Kansas City Assemblage Company. He and his wife, Myrtle had one son.
He died Monday at the Trinity Lutheran hospital in Kansas City around noon following a long illness. He had been a patient since December 31, 1951.
Vernon's funeral was held at the Freeman Chapel. Interment was in the Mt. Moriah Cemetery.
