Birth: 1664
Babergh District
Suffolk, England
Death: 1717
Evesham Township
Burlington County
New Jersey, USA

John was born to Quaker William Garwood and Ann Rowe. In 1681, at the age of seventeen, he came to America on the ship "Thomas and Ann". He was age twenty-three when his father died in 1687. He attended his brother Thomas's wedding in 1693 and at that time he owned a house on 90 acres. This land was in present Springfield Township, about three miles southeast of Burlington city. He was then married or soon thereafter as in 1698, Sarah Farr left five pounds to each of John's children John(3) and Jacob(1). John's wife is thought to be Mary Borton, daughter of William Borton as based on Garwood function attendances and land transfers. In 1701, John bought 2,000 acres jointly with a friend, Restore Lippencott of Mount Holly. This land was at Mount Pisgah, about ten miles southeast of Burlington city and in Springfield Township. John owned and lived on the north 1,000 acre piece that today contains Juliustown and Redwing airport. In 1714, John sold his lands and moved to Evesham Township. There is no more record of John and he was probably dead by 1721 as he didn't attend his son Jacob's wedding and there was no record of him after 1714. John had:
1) John in 1695
2) Jacob in 1697
3) Mary in 1699
4) Job in 1701
5) Elizabeth in 1704
6) Samuel in 1707
7) Joseph in 1709
8) Ann in 1711
9) Hannah in 1713
10) Martha in 1715

Note: William Borton obtained two one hundred acre pieces of land in Evesham in 1709 and this land and most of his estate was given to John Garwood's son Samuel in 1752. Samuel's mother is thought to be William Borton's daughter Mary, and it is William Borton's land that John probably moved to in 1714. Also, John's son Samuel and daughter Elizabeth produced certificates from Haddonfield Monthly Meeting (MM) and John's brother Thomas was a member of Haddonfield MM and lived in Evesham (present Mount Laurel) township.
