ROBERT G. BEER (R.G.) passed away peacefully at his home on September 18, 2014, after an extended illness surrounded by his family and his four legged friends, Greta and Garbo.

Born May 10, 1920 in Cleveland, he was the son of Jesse and Alice (Gott) Beer.

Robert graduated from Mansfield Senior High School in 1937 and went on to graduate from Purdue University with a Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering in 1941. He also did graduate study in Sanitary Engineering and Public Health at the University of Michigan and graduate study at the University of California at Berkley.

During World War II, he served with distinction with the 61st Naval Construction Battalion (Seabees). He served in the Pacific Theater, supervising construction crews who built runways and airfield facilities, military camps including water and sewage facilities in the Solomon Islands (Guadalcanal), Leyte, and the Philippines. Bob met Mary Nell in early 1943 in Los Angeles while training at the nearby Port Heueneme, prior to shipping out to the Pacific. They were married in San Francisco on his return from the Pacific. After the war, he worked as a design engineer at Oakland California for the East Bay Municipal Utility District.

Robert and Mary Nell moved to Mansfield where they founded the R.G. Beer Corporation which operated for over 50 years. The company's last project was reconstruction of the large timber frame barn at Malabar State Park. A few other projects included restoration of the locks on the Muskingum River, Madison Senior High School, First Presbyterian Church on Trimble Road, and the Holiday Inn in Mansfield. His work not only covered the state of Ohio, but several surrounding states.

Bob and Mary Nell were avid bridge players. Bob loved spending time with his family, especially traveling: visiting many countries throughout the world including China, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, South America, Mexico, the Pacific Islands, and the game parks of Africa. Other interests included horseback riding, tennis, gardening, reading, and civic and church activities. Bob was past President of the Rotary Club, past President of the Chamber of Commerce, Director of Junior Achievement, and a member of Richland County Metropolitan Park Commission, Ohio Contractors Association, Past President, Local Chapter, and National Society of Professional Engineers. He also was a member at the former Park Avenue Baptist Church for over 60 years.

The family would like to thank Mary Gilbert, respite caretaker, and Hospice of North Central Ohio for their excellent care of Bob.

Robert is survived by his children, Richard (Marie) Beer of Mansfield, Janet (Bruce) Beer Mann of Millserburg, and David Beer of San Diego, California; grandchildren, Lauren (Byron) Kehr, Matthew (Itiele) Adams, Taj Beer, Shea Beer, and Rylan Beer; great-grandchildren, Hunter Kehr, Parker Kehr, and Macy Adams; brother-in-law, Walton Forbes; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary Nell (Forbes) Beer; and sister, Barbara Beer Loy.
