James Fowler was born near Oxford, Ohio, April 29, 1817, and died in Dublin October 8, 1897, aged 80, 5 months and 9 days.

He was married to Miss Martha Dukate near Oxford, April 6, 1837. Eleven children were born to these parents, only two of whom are now living - Mrs. Andrews, of Indianapolis, and Mrs Green, of Chicago. Both were present when their father died.

In 1861, when living at Aurora, Mr. Fowler enlisted in Company F., 18th Indiana Volunteers, served three years and then re-enlisted and served to the close of the war. He was in many of the hard-fought battles, and was under Sherman in his march to the sea. His son John, who died a few years ago, served with his father during the war. In 1864 the family moved to Dublin, and have resided here ever since. James was a man of kind and generous heart, ready and willing at all times to render to others as he wished for them to do to him. Meet him when and where you would, he always showed due respect and a cordial greeting. He and his wife were worthy members of the Universalist church, and were always found in their place when meeting was held. A year or more ago he had a severe spell of sickness that came near ending his life, but he rallied and again enjoyed his usual health. About seven weeks ago he was taken to his bed, and from which attack his life ended. During his last sickness he was much of the time unconscious of his situation and surroundings. On last Tuesday for a short time his mind seemed to brighten up, but he was aware that the end was near, and while in this state he gave orders that if he died he wanted to be buried on Sunday next, which was done according to his wish.

The funeral took place from the Universalist church at 2 o'clock, Sunday. The services were conducted by Rev. C.W. Smith, of the M.E. church, assisted by Rev. Selig and the G.A.R. Post, of which there was a large representation. Interment in the Brethern cemetery.
