Caroline Gruver was born March 16, 1842 in Kendall County, Illinois, a daughter of Isaac & Nancy (Rarick) Gruver, who are buried in the Old Hillsdale Cemetery. She was the sixth of ten children. On April 19, 1866 she married Abraham S. Campbell in Kendall County, Illinois. They had three children: Ida Lucretia, Fred L. and Nancy Campbell. Abraham died in 1874.

On March 29, 1877 Caroline married John A. Young. He was born January 4, 1836 in Ohio, and died July 13, 1888 in Gage County Nebraska, where he is buried. John had previously been married to Permilia Jane Mannen. John and Permilla had seven children: Joanna, Alina, Frank S., Carry G., Kaiser Ewing, Essie McCann, and Cora Emma. Permilia died August 31, 1875. John and Caroline had one child, Edward Ernest Young. Printed in the Miami Republican, on October 3, 1884, under the heading "Court Docket" - "Caroline Young vs. John Young, Kingsly & Stevens for pltf. Brayman & Sheldon for deft.". They weren't married after this. She went by her first married name, and did not remarry. Caroline was a member of the Presbyterian Church across the street from the Old Hillsdale cemetery. She died December 3, 1925 in Hillsdale.

"The funeral of Mrs. Caroline Campbell was held in Hillsdale Sunday afternoon and burial was in the Hillsdale cemetery. Mrs. Campbell was mother of Ed. Young, operator here."
