One morning on August 8, 2011 both dogs were let out into their backyard to do their normal business. The wife, Telsa Dougherty, called them in 20 minutes later but they didn't come. She then ran downstairs out into the backyard and found that both Dozer Boy and Kyera were suddenly dead.
The family was horrified by the discovery and both dogs were taken to a local animal hospital for a necropsy but when nothing suspicious was found in Dozer Boy's stomach, they took Kyera to experts at Colorado State University. Meat was found in Kyera's esophagus and when it was tested it was found that it was laced with poison. Someone had thrown meat into the back yard to poison both of them and take their lives. The suspect has not been caught.
"I'm scared, I'm angry. I'm heartbroken," said Tesla Dougherty. The Dougherty's still have their dog's favorite cushion, their toys and food bowls sitting out almost like memorials to the family dogs they planned to have in their new home.
"I always dressed Kyera up for Halloween. She used to prance around in her costumes pose for pictures," said Tesla Dougherty.
Dozer Boy and Kyera were best of friends and they loved each other so much. They are always loved and missed by their family.
