Gaylon was the son of Elmer Dee Smith and Greta Margaret Druesedow-Smith. His siblings are Linda Kaye, Leonard Baggett (Butch) Vickie Elaine, and Jimmy Dee. Gaylon married Karen Priem from Pflugerville Tx and had a daughter named Chis Ann Smith.
He joined the US Marines during the Viet Nam war and was killed in a jeep accident on Okinawa.

When Gaylon became old enough to join the service, he voluntarily joined instead of waiting to be drafted. And, he wanted to go into the toughest branch...the Marine Corps. He was so proud to be a Marine.

By the time he was 18 years old, he was living on his own in Austin Texas. He had gotten his private pilot license and his goal was to become a commercial pilot after his service in the Marines ended. He was also a certified scuba diver and an avid motorcyclist.

His daughter, Chris Ann was his pride and joy. She was only 2 years old when he died.
