One of Australia's most experienced special forces soldiers, Warrant Officer Class 2 David Russell Nary, from the Special Air Service Regiment, died on 6th November 2005 when he was accidently struck by vehicle during mission rehearsal drill in Kuwait Middle East area of operations.
Warrant Officer David Nary was a very popular soldier with a wealth of special forces experience. He enlisted in the Australian Army in 1981, serving as an infantry soldier in 8/9 Royal Australian Regiment and 11/28 Royal Western Australian Regiment prior to joining the Special Air Service Regiment in 1989.
Warrant Officer Nary served Australia on operations in the Sinai, East Timor and Afghanistan. His experience, leadership and significant achievements within the Special Air Service Regiment were recognised in January 2005 when he was promoted to Warrant Officer Class 2.
Defence Minister Robert Hill joined the Chief of Defence Force, Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston, and the men and women of the Australian Defence Force in expressing his sadness at news of the death of Warrant Officer Nary.
Warrant Officer Nary died as a result of injuries suffered during a training activity in the Middle East area of operations.
"On behalf of the Australian Government, I would like to extend our deepest condolences and sympathy to the soldier's wife, to his children and to his family and friends for their loss," Senator Hill said.
"Our thoughts are with his family during this time and we join them in mourning the tragic loss of a fellow Australian."
It was reported WO Nary, who was in his early 40s, was taking part in close personal protection tactical vehicle training - jumping onto moving vehicles - when he fell backwards into the path of a second vehicle.
It is the second time WO Nary's wife has lost a husband in a military accident.
Her first husband, Corporal Gordon "Dutchy" Holland, died in a training accident at the SAS' Campbell Barracks at Swanbourne in Perth in 1993.
They shall grow not old.
