Jacob grew up with his siblings in Germany.
He married Carolina Pfaff, daughter of Johann Peter and Katharina (Zimmer) Pfaff, on August 19, 1849 in Germany.
Shortly after marrying they left Germany for America. They arrived in New York on May 16, 1850. After arriving here they made their way to Washington County, Ohio, settling on a farm in Lawrence Township. Jacob was a farmer his entire life.
Before they could reach Washington County, Carolina gave birth to their first child in Wheeling, Ohio County, West Virginia.
Together Jacob and Carolina had four known children: Caroline (1850-1927), Jacob (1855-1921), Charles "Karl" (1857-1903), and Elizabeth (1862-).
Jacob died on August 31, 1884. He was survived by his wife, two sons, two daughters, one sister, and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is buried at Ludwig Cemetery in Washington County, Ohio.
